He is good with character too, depicting an America where people are desperately searching for meaning and coming up with extreme solutions that merely drag them deeper into the mire of their own inadequacies. This is a novel full of ideas, not always a good recommendation, but in this case the writer has both the assurance and the imagination to develop and sustain his fiction. But the world, including the media, the government and an outlandish cult or two can hardly wait to get their hands on him. He subsequently finds that he loves his wife and children so much that he becomes a better man altogether. Three days later at his funeral he sits up in his coffin, apparently back from the dead. For the sake of appearances it is roughly stitched back into place at the post-mortem. In fact, it slices his head from his body. Ted Street is on his way to commit suicide when he's involved in a car crash that kills him. In this wonderful book Everett satirises American cults and the very notion of death itself.
